Biography

Senator Janeil C. A. Odle, LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M., L.E.C., is a legal practitioner and public servant in Barbados whose life demonstrates resilience and institutional advocacy. At five years old, she lost her sight following a blood clot that damaged her optic nerve. Despite early structural hurdles within the educational system, her academic achievements established historical precedent in Barbados.

Early life and education

At five years old, Senator Odle lost her sight following a blood clot that damaged her optic nerve. Her parents Heather and Jeffrey Odle strategised as a family, arranging lessons at Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary School and supporting her through Irving Wilson School and Combermere.

She taught herself computer operation and became proficient with the JAWS screen reader. Her father constructed tactile mathematical models; friends and family read textbooks aloud as she transcribed into Braille. She attained eight CXC passes and became class valedictorian at Barbados Community College, winning a Barbados Exhibition in English Literature and Law.

Legal career

She graduated at the top of her class from UWI with LL.B. First Class Honours, completed the Legal Education Certificate at Hugh Wooding Law School, and earned an LL.M. in Public Law. On 18 December 2020, she was admitted to the Bar as the first blind attorney-at-law in Barbados, delivering the feature address on behalf of her cohort.

Public service

As Disabilities Consultant to the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Senator Odle guides policy on the 90% unemployment rate among adult persons with disabilities. She serves in the Senate of Barbados, contributes to the CDB Future Leaders Network, and represented Barbados at the 17th UN CRPD Session in New York.

From the first blind student to sit the BSSEE in Braille to the first blind attorney called to the Bar, Senator Odle has consistently turned barriers into milestones.
